Gilbertine Order

Gilbertine Order
The order founded by Gilbert of Sempringham c. 1131 was unusual in being the only one which originated in England. Sempringham is in Lincolnshire, where Gilbert's family were wealthy landowners. His order was also distinctive for its establishing double monasteries, i.e. for men and women, in which the canons served the nuns. The rule of St Augustine was observed by the canons, while the nuns observed the rule of St Benedict. The first house was built c.1131. By the time of Gilbert's death in 1189, there were some 700 canons and 1,500 sisters. At the Dissolution there were 26 Gilbertine houses.
